A very bright student, with predicted grades of 7-9 in GCSE English.
Severe exam anxiety resulting in her failing her GCSE mock exam.
Worst case of exam anxiety ever.
The Cause
After assessing the student using my learning styles during a Discovery Session and checking her work against the exam marking scheme, I identified that she was writing overly complex exam answers.
This led to her running out of time during exams and not completing the paper.
She was losing marks and time with this approach.
The Solution
Through focused timed past paper practice and marking support from her English teacher, the student improved her time management and wrote more concise answers.
The Result
The student sat her English in the summer of 2019 in year 10 and was awarded a level 8. 5 grades higher than her mock exam.
She was calm, relaxed and focused during the exam.
The Takeaway
Bright students may overly complicate GCSEs and may benefit from guidance in exam technique.
